Meet Jamal and Jacory Greene of BeHealthConscious “Active Sports” in Decatur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamal and Jacory Greene.

Jamal and Jacory, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a Senior Health education major at Tennessee State University, I was given the assignment in my capstone course to create a nonprofit organization that helps people with a cause I was directly affected by. After losing my mother from complications of diabetes my junior year of college, I knew the direction that I wanted to go. I created a nonprofit by the name of BeHealthConsious organization and starting collaborating with health education experts all around Nashville to create health events to start educating people about nutrition, and educate athletes about eating correctly. After graduating I moved back to Atlanta and my brother Jacory Greene approached me with the idea of wanting to personal train and change my nonprofit to a corporation. His idea was pure brilliance as I was a current assistant football coach and Certified Health education & physical education teacher in the public school system of Georgia. With my sports background and his personal training background we merged the two where we like to call it “Personal Training meets sports training”. BeHealthConscious “Active Sports” was formed and he started personal training and I started doing sports performance training. We worked out of All-American Skating rink training on Sundays and Mondays for a year and decided to take a leap of faith and open our own gym in 2017. Let’s just say history is being made!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Starting out we would train in parks outside in the rain, heat, and cold. Many times we would cancel sessions because the elements were to extreme causing us to lose clients or even have clients that did not want to work out outside. So staying humble and trusting the process was a goal for us.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about BeHealthConscious “Active Sports” – what should we know?
BeHealthConscious “Active Sports” is a really diverse gym that offers personal training, Sports Performance Training, Group Fitness Classes, youth sports training, Indoor and outdoor Batting, chiropractic care and more. What sets us apart from most gyms is not only our wide variety of services but our genuine family friendly atmosphere. We take pride in getting to know our clients, their family and friends. We go the extra mile to make sure everyone that walks through our door member or not leaves knowing BeHealthConscious cares.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am all smiles when I’m on the sidelines with a clipboard at hand. I love what I do, and I’ve been told many times that the love I have for the game can be seen as soon as I step on the field. Coaching is one of my favorite jobs, hobbies and passions. It is one of the few topics I can talk about without ever growing uninterested (sorry to those of you who have drifted off during one of these rants). I often seem to “bounce off the walls” with excitement as I talk about my love of coaching. Anytime a person asks me about my favorite thing to do, coaching is always the first thing that comes to my mind. To me, it’s not just a job or an experience, but a way of life. Coaching is my life. Coaching has had nothing but a positive impact on my life. It’s more than just a paycheck or “glorified babysitting.” It’s also more than just being the teacher or leader to the players. Coaching is about being that one person who has the ability to make a positive difference in a person’s life. I feel strongly that coaches do not, and should not, coach for themselves, but rather, for others; they should strive to show their players how to love the game. Like teaching, you have to get to know your players for who they are as people – their likes and dislikes, their goals and passions and their love for the game. Taking the time to get to know the players shows that I care about them and am only here to make them better, both on and off the field. The best part of coaching is not actually the act of coaching, but witnessing my team’s growth, both in their play and in personality. All of the teams I have coached and watched play their freshmen year through their senior year have grown into remarkable individuals. I have been fortunate enough to be able to see my first group of freshmen play at the varsity level and see how their level of play has increased. Coaching is so much more than blowing a whistle (there’s no need for one) or telling your players to get on the line because it’s time to run. Coaching is understanding the people you work with and encouraging them to be the best they can be, both on and off the court. As the founder and co-owner of BeHealthConscious, I will deliver that same passion and offer the best service to all.

COMPONENTS OF FITNESS

COMPONENTS OF FITNESS

Physical fitness  is defined as the ability to function effectively in physical work, training, and other activities, while still having enough energy left over to handle any emergencies that may arise. To improve your level of fitness in preparation for Basic Combat Training, you should focus on the following components of physical fitness; Cardio Respiratory Endurance (CR), Muscular Strength and Endurance, Flexibility, and Body Composition.
In order to improve your fitness it is important to reach your bodies Target Heart Rate, or training heart rate. Cardio exercise, which can involve running, biking, or swimming, can help Soldiers reach their cardio potential.

On today's battlefield Soldiers need a high level of strength and endurance to successfully do their jobs and help each other. Progressively working against resistance will produce gains in this area.

Good flexibility helps Soldiers efficiently accomplish physical tasks like lifting, loading, climbing, parachuting, running, and rappelling with less risk of injury. Stretching helps maintain such flexibility.

Improving your cardio and muscle stamina will have a positive impact on your body's composition and will result in less fat. Excessive body fat detracts from the other fitness components, reduces performance, and negatively affects your health.

How to Do a Burpee

Burpees, also known as squat thrusts, are one of the only equipment-free exercises that work your entire body and give you a great cardiovascular workout.
BENEFITS OF BURPEES -   Burpees are a full body exercise which virtually works every muscle in the body, this means that you can burn more calories in a lot less time. You can do burpees almost anywhere as you are only using your own body weight. They boost strength and endurance which will help with everyday activities or enhance you further with physical training. MUSCLE GROUPS Burpees are a full body exercise but here are just a few of the muscles they work, deltoids, biceps, triceps, pectorals major, obliques, abdominal, quadriceps, gluteus maximus, hamstrings and gastrocnemius (calf) just to name a few. STEP BY STEP GUIDE Stand with your feet hip width apart and your arms down by your side Lower into a squat position with your hands flat on the floor in front of you Kick your legs backwards into a press up position and lower your chest to the floor Push your chest back up to the press up position thrust both feet forward so you are back in the squat position Jump up and raise both hands over your head BURPEE VARIATION Stand with your feet hip width apart and your arms down by your side Lower into a squat position with your hands flat on the floor in front of you Step both legs backwards so you are in a press up position Step both legs back in to chest so you are back at a squat position Lift up onto the balls of the feet gently with your hands raised above your head.

What Is CrossFit?

Chances are you know someone who does CrossFit. Whether they are the co-worker who constantly talks about his WOD, the old college friend who suddenly has Michelle Obama-arms or your neighbor who does burpees in his driveway, it's hard to deny that this fitness trend is here to stay. What is it? CrossFit is a program developed to offer a full-body workout that combines elements of cardio, weight lifting, gymnastics, core training and more to prepare the body for the unexpected. According to the CrossFit website: "CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide." This high-intensity workout is extremely varied and all about getting the most bang for your workout buck. A CrossFitter will likely never do the same routine twice in one week and each workout will usually last between 45 minutes to an hour. CrossFit gyms are usually large warehouses (often referred to as the "box") which offer group classes where an individual may choose to workout anywhere between three to five times a week. CrossFit coaches either develop their own daily workout or follow the "WOD" or Workout of the Day from the CrossFit website. For example, a typical CrossFit WOD may look like this: Sample WOD: 20 Min AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible) 100m Run 2 Burpees 2 Deadlifts 185lb 2 Pull-ups AMRAP means that you will do your best to complete as many rounds of this sequence as possible in the time allotted; in this case 20 minutes.

Sevananda Natural Foods Market

Since 1974, our consumer-owned natural foods market, has provided quality whole foods to shoppers and members in Atlanta and surrounding cities throughout Georgia. Our fresh market is owned and operated by our members and provides a natural source of healthy, local, and organic foods to the local community.
Sevananda is proud to support local farmers and businesses by selling local organic food, including seasonal produce, natural groceries, bulk herbs and spices, and other specialty health and wellness products in high demand. Offering locally grown foods allows us to live up to the commitment of our triple bottom line philosophy of economic, environmental, and social responsibility. By supporting our local community, we help to reduce the environmental impact of product transportation and provides our members and shoppers with the option of fresh, organic produce that is grown within 150 miles of our store, as well as many other natural foods, supplements, and health products.
If you’re looking for the best in whole and natural foods, vitamins and supplements, you’ve come to the right place. At Sevananda, we make it easy to find out all there is to know about the food you eat. What’s in it, and what isn’t. Where it’s from, how it’s grown, and who it’s grown by. That’s because we sell only the highest quality whole and natural foods — sourced locally and organically grown whenever possible — just as we have since 1974. And with product sourcing policies more demanding than any other stores, we fully guarantee the integrity and quality of what we sell. We call that food integrity. It’s what we live by, and what Sevananda has been all about from the beginning. Because it’s the only way we can promise you’re getting food you can trust. You can find out more about the food integrity difference at Sevananda from any of our store team members — every one of them’s more than happy to share what they know in the cause of good food. Welcome to a very different kind of market.

The Dekalb Farmers Market

           The Market History

The Dekalb Farmers Market began on June 2nd, 1977 as a small 7,500 sq. ft. produce stand in Decatur, Georgia. Since that humble beginning, we have grown into a 140,000 sq. ft. true world market serving up to 100,000 people per week. The original founder and owner of the market, Robert Blazer, is still in charge of operations along with his wife, Barbara, and son, Daniel.
As the very first private farmers market of its kind in Georgia, their reputation in the industry is as a pioneer in fresh food distribution to the consumer. They are very unique in receiving direct shipments of fresh food without costly warehousing and distribution delays. The result is the highest quality, lowest cost, and largest variety of fresh and organic food products currently available.

Sitting Can Kill: How Exercise Can Reduce Heart Failure

While sitting may not seem harmful, a sedentary lifestyle may raise the risk of heart disease and premature death. Inactivity may also increase the chances of heart failure in men. Sitting Can Kill: Exercise Can Reduce Heart Failure Heart failure affects an estimated 5.7 million Americans, and there are more than 550,000 new cases each year, according to the American Heart Association. Previous research has shown that regular physical activity lowers the risk of coronary heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure and diabetes. A new study further supports the benefits of exercise — finding that high levels of physical activity and low levels of inactivity may prevent heart failure in men. "Exercise regularly and sit less to prevent heart failure." Deborah Rohm Young, PhD, senior scientist at Kaiser Permanente in Pasadena, California, led research on 82,695 racially diverse men, ages 45 to 69 from the California Men’s Health Study. All participants began the study without prevalent heart failure. Heart failure can be a misleading term because it does not mean that the heart has stopped working, but rather the heart muscle is not pumping enough blood to keep up with the body's needs. Data was collected on their exercise levels and evaluated in terms of metabolic equivalent of tasks (METs). This is a measure of the body’s energy use. After following these individuals for up to 10 years, scientists found 3,473 men to be diagnosed with heart failure. Based on the results, Dr. Young and her colleagues discovered that men who didn’t exercise much were 52 percent more likely to develop heart failure than participants who had consistently high levels of physical activity. Men who sat for at least five hours a day and got little exercise had more than double the heart failure risk of men who were very physically active and sat for two hours or less a day. Even if participants exercised regularly, sitting had a negative influence on their health. No matter how much they exercised, men who spent five or more hours a day sitting outside of work were 34 percent more likely to develop heart failure compared to those who sat two hours a day or less, according to the investigation. The authors noted study limitations of not including women and relying on self-reported physical activity. Dr. Young said in a press release that people should follow the American Heart Association recommendation of getting at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity to reduce the risk for heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases. Sarah Samaan, MD, cardiologist and physician partner at the Baylor Heart Hospital in Plano, Texas, told dailyRx News, “Congestive heart failure can be caused by high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, stiffness of the heart muscle or weakness of the heart muscle. Exercise helps to prevent and limit all of these conditions.” The idea of exercising should not be intimidating, added Dr. Samaan. “Exercise can be as simple and easy as getting up and walking 20 to 30 minutes daily,” she said. “It's also important to build some active time into the day. Instead of phoning a colleague at the other end of the building, get up and walk to his or her desk. When possible, spend more of the day standing than sitting. Limit screen time, including time spent in front of the TV or surfing the web. Other studies have found that the more TV someone watches, the more likely they are to develop heart disease and diabetes.” The study was published on January 21 in American Heart Association journal Circulation: Heart Failure. Research was supported by a grant from the California Cancer Research Program and the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Community Benefit Program. dailyRx: Relevant Health News Image Source: © Blaz Kure | Dreamstime.com
