Nashville Mobile Market

Nashville Mobile Market is in quite high demand for appearances in the next couple weeks, so we really need your help! Below are four events at which NMM's presence has been requested. My hope is that you'll have at least one of these events you could show for. I'm not going to set up shifts quite yet, since I know y'all sometimes only have an hour here or there to contribute. Please send me the times you'd be able to rep NMM ASAP. These events are right around the corner!

All events just asked that we set up a booth, so all you'd have to do would be to show up, pass out brochures, and oodle and ahhh about NMM.

CFA's Food Day, October 24, from 5-8 at Nashville Farmers' Market (booth set-up from 4-4:45)
A celebration of local food system heroes, and an invitation for the public to enjoy tasty creations from Nashville eateries and collectively rising to the challenge to end hunger / create a healthy, just and sustainable food system. YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER HERE -- free, delicious food!

Edgehill Health Fair, October 24, from 11-1 at Gernert Homes
A health fair for the Edgehill community. Edgehill was NMM's pilot community -- it'll be neat to interact with the community partners and customers who got us going!

Lake Providence Health Expo, October 29, from 10-3 at Lake Providence Missionary Baptist Church (5891 Nolensville Road)
An effort to perform outreach focusing on the health concerns of individuals and empowering them to make informed health care decisions to improve their overall health and wellness. If you want to see who's on the cutting-edge of healthcare for under-resourced areas, there will be some big names at this event.

Edgehill Halloween Party, October 29, from 6-9
A family fun event that with fall festivities for kids and parents. You can probably wear costumes to coax people to our booth.

E-mail me, Abby Hannifan (lauren.a.hannifan@vanderbilt.edu), back quick quick quick! Thanks a lot!

Jerome Harrison’s failed physical turned up a brain tumor

Jerome Harrison’s failed physical turned up a brain tumor
The reason for Jerome Harrison's(notes) failed physical, the one that voided the trade between the Lions and Eagles, was a brain tumor, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions agreed to a trade on Tuesday that would've sent Harrison to Philadelphia. A day later, however, the trade was voided when Harrison did not pass a physical.
Without trade, Jerome Harrison doesn't get physical. Without physical, doctors don't find brain tumor. Trade might have saved his life.
We don't yet know of a definitive prognosis for Harrison, but Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com says that the tumor is "considered treatable and not life-threatening." He also says Harrison wouldn't play again this year.
Obviously, we wish the best for Harrison. Treatable or not, the term "brain tumor" is horrifying, and must've come as an unbelievable shock to the guy.
This is the worst kind of news, and obviously, there's nothing good about it. As Schefter points out, though, it's not hard to see the trade as a blessing. A physical is mandatory when you're traded in the NFL, and without it, maybe doctor's don't find the tumor until much, much later.

3 Reasons Why You're Not Losing Weight at the Gym

www.BeHealthConscious.Org

Source: 3 Reasons Why You're Not Losing Weight at the Gym

You go to the gym, work out, but you still aren't losing any weight. What gives? It's a frustrating scenario but not an impossible one to change. Here are three reasons why you aren't losing weight at the gym and what to do about them.
  • You're Not Doing Enough (Intense) Cardio Aerobic activity is the most efficient way to burn calories, so make sure you are consistent with cardio workouts. We recommend doing at least 30-45 minutes of cardio, three to four times a week. It's also important to pick the right kind of cardio workout. Studies show that faster-paced workouts help release fat-burning hormones in the body and that interval training is key to losing unwanted belly fat. Still not convinced that you should step up your gym workouts? A recent study said that a 45-minute vigorous workout gets three times the net calories burned compared to the same 45 minutes spent walking; it also increases metabolic rate for up to 14 hours post-workout. To melt away unwanted pounds, choose high-intensity workouts like intervals, running, boot camp, or spin.
  • You Aren't Really Committed You showed up to the gym, which is awesome. But what's not awesome is how you might be spending your time there — weight loss is as much a mental game as a physical one. Mindlessly walking on the treadmill while flicking through a copy of Us Magazine isn't the best way to go about weight loss, and neither is talking yourself out of a workout once you're there. (You can lose a calorie burn of over 50 calories from just shaving five minutes off of a workout!) Commit yourself by finding a specific goal or personal reason that inspires you to lose the weight and use that as motivation to maintain your fitness routine. Along the way, set smaller goals for yourself and celebrate in some small way when you meet them. This will help you stay focused the entire way through.
  • You Don't Strength Train Even though cardio is key to weight loss, a good fitness program should incorporate one to two strength training sessions per week. Strength training can reduce overall body fat by three percent in just 10 weeks since muscle burns more calories than fat. And don't forget the after-burn: after an hour-long strength training session, the average woman burns an extra 100 calories over the next 24 hours. Maximize your time by rolling cardio and strength workouts into one. Circuit training intervals and bootcamp-style workouts focus on mixing bursts of cardio with serious strength training moves, but if you don't have time for a long session, perform supersets of compound moves instead.

Apple’s Board of Directors on Steve Jobs

After a six year struggle, Steve Jobs was taken by his longtime battle with cancer.
Apple’s Board of Directors said the following in a statement:
“We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.
Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.
His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.”
Steve Jobs began his struggle with pancreatic cancer in 2004, when he informed Apple employees that he had undergone surgery for an islet-cell neuroendocrine tumor.
Jobs’s condition began to worsen in 2008 though, eventually leading to his second leave of absence. It was revealed that Jobs underwent a liver transplant that year.
In 2011, Steve Jobs took his third leave of absence so that he could focus on his health. It would prove to be his final one. Jobs never returned as full-time CEO, and in August he resigned as CEO of Apple
